Mikey's Muse

April 25, 1997 Get It: 104 Vol. 1, No. 73

CLOMP CLOMP: The heavy footsteps echo on the stairs … from out of the depths comes the plea for help … unspoken but obvious in the bloodshot eyes surrounded by the pale skin of a cave dweller … #1 daughter’s project continues to crash the Internet each time it runs … the University’s lookin’ for the mysterious virus … she can’t go on undiscovered much longer … we’ve jes’ returned from gettin’ “gas” … (I s’pose in the long run it’ll be gas anyway … I’m havin’ visions o’ Vidalia onions dancin’ in my head … ‘n I’m not even asleep yet!) … I sit down at the table to listen to her explanation of the problem … it’s a simple concept … the mappin’ of a set of lines onto a grid such that one ‘n only one line segment resides in a grid … unless of course the lines join at a common vertices … then given the map (in the form of a quadtree) determine the shortest path between two points … still with me? … me either! … oh well … she’s been workin’ real hard at it … can you imagine how frustratin’ it is to try to tell a yawnin’ father where you’re at? … ‘n have ‘im say “let me see the problem” … like he’s gonna have to start over from scratch to understand what she’s gotta have done in a few hours? … sweet Mom whips up a batch o’ lemon-poppy seed muffins for some late night energy … a reg’lar June Cleaver … my solution? … keep puttin’ in more print statements … it’s kinda like boilin’ water ‘n findin’ clean sheets … it keeps ya busy while you’re thinkin’ … ‘course the lights dim every time she fires it up … I keep offerin’ words o’ encouragement like “oh, don’t worry, you’ll never have to do this in the real world” … “this is stupid!” … teachin’s not one o’ my strong suits … patiently listenin’s even weaker … next thing I know the alarm’s goin’ off ‘n it’s time for me to head to the office … to continue workin’ on my quadtree mappin’ algorithm to find the shortest distance between two points which is due by 2:00 AM tomorrow … I wish she’d hurry up ‘n finish so I could steal her work!

CLASSICAL: Here’s one for anyone who’s got the ability to play “midi” files … if you’ve never heard that term before then you may not … ‘less you’re usin’ Windows 95 on a computer with a sound card ‘n speakers … I found this site from a random traveler on the ‘net … (didja know they estimate there’s 40 million of us now?) … kick back ‘n surf on over to http://www.prs.net/midi.html … there are 3,677 files in this archive of Western classical music … I’ve only made it through 1,453 of ‘em but it’s really cool … you can sit with your back to the door … act like you’re playin’ piano on your keyboard … really freaks people out … next I’ll have to get a wig so I can shake ‘n flip my hair while I’m fakin’ it!
