The Face in the Surface
Synopsis
Given a five year window before a combination of an outbreak of global
hostilities and an impact by a massive asteroid that cannot be diverted,
and knowing that the resulting environmental destruction will cause a mass
extinction like that at the end of the Cretaceous period, a team of scientists
develop the means for humans to retreat to the depths of the oceans. After
five centuries, Earth conditions have recovered to the point that humans
could return to open air habitats. However, most "oceanids" have found
life in the marine environment preferable to life on dry land. But a sub-culture
of "Traditionalists," led by power hungry Governor Kellman, are determined
to reclaim the land. At the same time, Lisa Bauer, an archaeologist, discovers
that small pockets of humans have survived on land, although existence
is extremely difficult for them. This discovery leads to a series of events
that threaten both civilizations and to a couple's love that crosses the
boundary that separates the two cultures.
Availability
The book, The Face in the Surface, is available through amazon.com
for $6.99. It is also listed on indigo.ca, a Canadian on-line book seller,
and through most major book sellers. As of this posting, however, only
the amazon.com listing is fully accurate. Somehow, indigo.ca, Barnes and
Noble, and the other book stores, received a listing with errors in it.
In particular, they list the book as A Face in the Surface instead
of The Face... and give my name as James R. Rust instead of James
Rusk, Jr. I'm not sure who's responsible for the errors, but I've been
pushing the publisher since early July to get the listings corrected.
The publisher is Le Gesse Stevens Publishing, telephone (800)299-7943,
FAX (619)758-9040.
I've included part
of the first chapter of the book in this page as a teaser.
