Useful Sites

Searching Places

Google

Google is the very first place I check for information. I have installed the Google toolbar on my web browser to make it even easier to get there. You can get amazing results with a little practice in entering keywords.

TradeWave Galaxy

Yet another place to look for just the right site!

RealWorld Research Homepage

A very eclectic collection of links and, of course, the standard search engines.

search.com

The "be all, do all" searching site! The self-proclaimed ultimate in searching sites. Actually, I tend to agree with them. c|net did a great job in organizing and assembling all the search engines you should ever need!

Starting Point

Use a MetaSearch and leave the mechanics to this site. Clean, no confusion, just the facts!

Yahoo!

What list of search engines would be complete without a reference to Yahoo! Even though they're probably mentioned on every other site in the world. I certainly had to include them.

Companies/Organizations

The United States Postal Service, Your Post Office

Nifty site for finding Zip Codes, correct addresses, postage and lots more.

Databases/Libraries

IPL The Internet Public Library

If you've worn your fingers out searching the web or don't even know how to begin then check this site out. You can ask questions and they'll find the obscure site you need and let you know the URL.

Library of Congress World Wide Web (LC Web) Home Page

What more can I say.

U.S. Department of Education Publications

If your heavy into statistical information about education in the United States then this is the place for you. Hope you have lots of spare disk space in case you decide to download any of the reports.

People Directories

Switchboard

Telephone directories on-line. Recently updated with August, 1996 Residential Listings. You can register for free and enhance your listing.

Telephone Directories On The Web

Find people around the world with more telephone books at your disposal. I hope your friends all have telephones!

The Student Center

A place for students and teens to find each other and create home pages.

Yahoo! People Search

You can do it by telephone number, e-mail or home page. For the well-connected netizen.

Reverse Phone Directory

But what do you do if you know the phone number but want to find out the name that goes with it? Look no further than this site. They provide a convenient way to try the phone number against six different services. Quite scary! Try your own number in each directory - one of them actually lets you then pull up all your neighbors too.

Publications/News Services

@Computerworld

My favorite way to keep my finger on the pulse of technology - just ask Julia King! If that doesn't sound like a gratuitous plug then I don't know what does!

Welcome to CNET.COM

Probably the ultimate site for high technology. Even has it's own television show. They cover just about everything there is to cover in this business. Even with a weekly newsletter to your e-mail box. Pop on over and join up.

CIO.COM

Real boring technical management stuff and how to try to make yourself valuable to your company. Especially interesting to anyone with CIO in their job title.

CNNfn - the financial network

Just when you thought your money was safe - see if you can beat the odds and play the market.

NBC4, Washington, DC

If you can't get enough of NBC on television - find out what's on tonight in the Washington, DC area. See the latest weather and preview the news.

ZDNet Reviews

All about buying computer stuff. Tells you about all the latest computers for sale and how the different models compare to each other.

The News & Observer on the Web

News and information for the Triangle. Raleigh, North Carolina. Came in real handy when Fran (the hurricane) was heading towards Washington, DC.

Voter Information Services (VIS)

You want to be a responsible citizen? You can access the records of the people in your area right here.

Welcome to CNET.COM

c|net hits my list in a few other categories but here's the main site. This is a cornucopia of technical information (plus some other things).

Today on HotWired!

A must read for the properly connected net-head.

Software

SHAREWARE.COM -- the way to find shareware on the Internet

Another child of c|net! These folks have about cornered the market on useful sites! Sometimes it can be a little difficult finding exactly what you want because there is so much available.
