October 21, 1995 Volume 1, No. 1

1,000,000 OR SO: Now that's a hot topic...the Park Service can't win no matter what they do...the organizers won't be happy with a person less than they predicted...so whadda ya' do?...pop quiz Mr. Counter...DUH...looks like a million people to me...let's get on with life!...all I know is that I was dreading the mornin' commute 'round the Beltway...the only problem I saw was all the State Troopers at every exit...everybody had to slow down...stare at 'em!

OLD DOG'S NEW TRICK: I took a programming course this week...C++...5 action packed days of mind-numbing lecture...frustrating lab exercises...sometimes I think I should hang up my pocket-protector...(next to my slide rule)...turn in my beeper... grow up...quit tryin' to run with the young dogs...but I just can't...I'm addicted to staring at computer monitors...the hum of the workstation in the background...the latest issue of Bill Gate's saga sitting in my in-box...who in their right mind would want to give up all that for fresh air...sunshine...socializin'?

GEEK'S BEWARE: Did you know that the Internet is used by real people?...lookin' for other than techie info?...it was a shock to me!...I thought it was just for teenie boppers tryin' to be grown up in the chat rooms...geeks tryin' to outdo each other with clever home pages...but there really are useful things out there...I kind of blew it though...the president of our company came in for a surfin' demo...since the company had just put a page on-line...I was goin' down the list of Hot Sites on Netscape's home page...I was goin' to select something intellectual that might match his interests...accidently selected some Heavy Metal home page...got flustered... couldn't get out of it gracefully...the graphics were taking forever to download...he walked away...shakin' his head...mutterin' 'bout technology...I guess I lost that convert!

HERE KITTY KITTY: As if life wasn't busy enough...my 3 dogs need a friend...so now we're lookin' at cats!...wanna get a long-haired one...so I can go through oodles of masking tape tryin' to get all the hair off my dark suits!...live with distressed furniture...that 90's look of shredded couch arms...the lovely scent of the litter box...instant afghans on the couch seats...gourmet catfood... I guess we really are crazy!

FALL BACK: That's right...next weekend...Halloween...Trick or Treat...haunted houses... an extra hour to sleep...or sit 'round a campfire...a brewskie in one hand...s'mores in the other...freezin' your buns off!...at least you get the ol' body reset to the new schedule...'cept for the part about comin' home in the really dark!
